You can purchase the Top Computer Executive Directory here.

The Directory of Top Computer Executives database was created in 1972 with the goal of covering the largest IT departments across the U.S. and Canada. For an organization to be listed, it must have a full-time VP, Director, or Manager of IT; have a multi-user host computer; or have more than 75 deployed personal computers in the U.S. or 25 in Canada. The primary focus is companies with more than 500 employees, with coverage currently expanding to companies with 250 or more employees.

How accurate is the Directory? How up-to-date is it?

It is ACR's goal to update every entry at least once per year. Updates are generally accomplished through a telephone interview, as well as occasional mail verifications. Update activities reveal that:
  • About 85% of all records have some type of change to their data
  • About 20% to 25% of all top computer executives leave their jobs
  • About 15% of second-level managers leave their jobs
  • About 7.5% of phone numbers change (not including area code changes)
  • About 6.5% of company addresses change
All electronic lists and data bases are based on the most current data available. The printed version is published twice per year so as many changes as soon as possible can be distributed. As an indicator of accuracy, the return rate of bad addresses for direct mail campaigns is generally less than one percent. That's not to say that deliverability is better than 99%, because people and addresses change every day. Directory accuracy, however, is something we take very seriously.

Where and how does ACR find new sites/data?

There are a wide variety of places to locate massive lists of company information across the U.S. and Canada. From these sources, ACR concentrates on organizations that have the highest potential to be supporting large IT functions. Through selectively concentrating on organizations with gross revenues of $50 million or more, or 250+ employees, as well as organizations within certain industry segments, new quality leads are located each month. Each update cycle typically produces about 700 to 1,200 new installations that are added to the database.

What data is available for each entry?

  • Company name
  • Address
  • City, state, and zip/postal code
  • Switchboard phone
  • Main host system(s)
  • Web URL
  • Indication whether a site is using UNIX or Windows Server OS
  • Number of IT employees
  • Number of desktop systems deployed throughout the organization
  • Number of employees at this organization
  • Fortune 1000, Forbes 500, InformationWeek 500, or Canada Post 500 listed

One-year unlimited use and lifetime use databases include all available data. The book version includes all data except the fax number and magazine list codes. One-time use lists only include the data required for that particular campaign.

What types of companies or organizations are listed?

The Directory concentrates on organizations that have the highest potential to be supporting large IT functions. For an organization to be listed, it must have a full-time VP, Director, or Manager of IT; have a multi-user host computer; or have more than 75 deployed PCs in the U.S. or 25 in Canada.

What kinds of people are listed?

The Directory lists the top-ranking individual over the IT function, such as the CIO, VP, Director, or Manager of information technology. In addition, second-level managers (who directly report to the top executive) include the manager of software development, manager of operations, manager of networking/data communications, manager of microcomputers, and the manager of technical support.

Who Will Find the Directory Valuable?

  • Sales managers. Account representatives and sales managers will find the Directory an attractive and easy-to-use guide to IT shops in their territories.
  • Telemarketers. Accurate telephone numbers and contact names within many departments make the Directory a perfect telemarketing tool.
  • Market researchers and product planners. By putting the Directory to use within your market research department, you can quickly determine market potential and trends within a geographic region, by computer make or model, or within a specific industry.
  • Direct mail marketers. A most critical element of direct mail is getting your message to the right person with the individual's complete name, title, department, and address. Coupled with the Directory's accuracy, this means high deliverability and a higher readership for your message.
  • Listed executives. These professionals use the Directory to contact peers in similar shops and develop local roundtable groups.
In addition, the Directory is a valuable resource to help you stay informed of the latest management changes within a given territory, to follow the implementation of new hardware architectures, or to analyze industry-wide changes.
