SOA Platforms: Software Infrastructure Requirements for Successful SOA Deployments

Report Code: BG-0041 Date: 6/2007 By: Butler Group

The objective of this Report is to provide information and give guidance on the selection of software to support the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) runtime environment. While much of the Report focuses on the capabilities and strategies of leading vendors in this space, it also provides an introduction to the reasons for implementing SOA in terms of the business benefits that can be realized, and the technology functionality that will be required to deliver these. It also provides a brief introduction to the impact that SOA may be expected to have on organizational structure.

Abstract:
SOA products are experiencing high growth, but the market is still focused on a low volume of high-value sales to large enterprises. A very large number of vendors are competing for market share by aiming to offer the broadest possible set of SOA infrastructure, targeting not just the runtime environment but also the analytics, governance, development and modeling.

Driven by competitive pressure and the eventual saturation of the high-end market, SOA technologies will start to become commoditized. The tendency for user organizations to deploy SOA to underlie tactical projects as an alternative to making a long-term strategic commitment to SOA will also have a commoditizing effect, and will provide a viable market for some of the smaller vendors that focus on a particular niche. This will also influence the types of features that users will look for in evaluating products.

What Is an SOA Platform?

The definition of what comprises the ‘SOA Platform’ provides much scope for disagreement. The emphasis of this Report is on runtime capabilities. This includes runtime management and administration, but does not include extended analysis or detailed discussion on modeling, policy management, or extended analysis of Business Activity Monitoring (BAM). The focus of the Report therefore covers:
  • Core Platform Capabilities
    • Reliable Messaging
    • Message Validation
    • Message Transformation
    • Message Routing/Brokering
    • Event Management
  • Extended Platform Capabilities
    • Services Registry
    • Application Adapters/Connectors
    • Transaction/State Management
    • Composition Studio/Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
    • Fault Detection and Performance Measurement
    • Lifecycle Management
    • Security Policy Enforcement
    • Composition/Process Runtime Engine
    • Rules Engine/Business Rules Management System (BRMS)
    • Audit Logging and Visualization
This set of features corresponds roughly to the bundling of capabilities into the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) suites of several vendors. However, there are sufficient differences between the use of this term (by vendors and analysts alike) to make the term less than useful in describing what a product is capable of doing. This Report will use the term ‘SOA Platform’, but it will also use the ‘ESB’ term where this is used by specific vendors to describe their products.

Technology Audits and Vendor Shortlist

The SOA Platforms report describes the methodology used by Butler Group in collecting the information from vendors and weighting the results to give a balanced perspective on their capabilities. It presents a comprehensive Features Matrix showing the capabilities of 13 of the leading SOA vendors. The information in the matrix is summarized as a set of capability diagrams.

The report also includes Butler Group's market lifecycle ratings that consider the historical and likely future placement of vendors in addition to the current product capabilities. This information, together with the deployment scenarios and technology audits included, should be considered along with the unique requirements of each customer organization to arrive at a possible shortlist of SOA vendors.

To help accomplish this, the report includes a detailed Technology Audit of each of the following SOA vendors:
  • BEA Systems – AquaLogic Platform
  • Cape Clear – Cape Clear 7
  • Cordys – Cordys BPMS
  • Fiorano Software, Inc. – Fiorano SOA™ 2007 Platform
  • IBM – IBM SOA Platform
  • InterSystems – Ensemble v4
  • JBoss – JBoss ESB and JBoss JEMS
  • Microsoft Corporation – Microsoft SOA Strategy
  • Oracle – Oracle SOA Platform
  • Progress Software – Sonic ESB 7.5
  • SAP – SAP NetWeaver
  • Sun – Sun Java™ Composite Application Platform Suite
  • TIBCO Software – TIBCO SOA Suite
  • webMethods – webMethods Fabric 7

Use This Report to Learn:

  • The business benefits that can be derived from SOA.
  • How business benefits translate into technology requirements.
  • What capabilities should be looked for in a complete SOA infrastructure.
  • How the Enterprise Service Bus concept relates to SOA requirements.
  • Which vendors are able to provide a complete SOA infrastructure capability, and what the detailed capabilities of these vendors are.
  • Butler Group rankings of the capabilities of leading vendors.
  • How different deployment scenarios impact the selection of products.
  • The point-solution products that are likely to be valuable in SOA deployments.
  • The point-solution vendors that should be considered.
