By investigating the state of adoption of these technologies, insights can be gained into potential shifts in the investment priorities for the coming year. By combining the technology adoption information presented in this chapter with the ROI and TCO characteristics reported in Chapter 4, ROI and TCO Trends (CE-4001C), additional insights into the likelihood of positive economic returns or risk of cost overruns can be identified, especially for technologies that are in the early stages of adoption. Mature technologies can usually be expected to produce the same results year after year, but emerging technologies are more likely to show improvements in cost-effectiveness after experience is gained in their application. On the other hand, obsolete technologies will grow more costly to operate and maintain as they age.
