Microsoft Weighs in on SaaS CRM
Is Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 the right CRM solution for your organization? Find out in this analysis from Ovum. Microsoft staked a larger claim in the customer relationship management (CRM) market early in 2008 with the launch of Dynamics CRM 4.0. The new version added a number of features, including multi-tenant capability and tighter integration with Outlook. Most importantly, though, the new product can support both on-premise and hosted deployment on the same code base. With this capability, Microsoft has added a new software-as-service (SaaS) offering, hosted in its own data centers, to its solutions catalog. This new offering, Dynamics CRM Online, joins existing on premise and partner-hosted CRM solutions in a line-up that allows Microsoft to address a broad swath of the CRM market. This self-hosted offering presents Microsoft with a tricky challenge: it must clearly explain to would-be CRM hosting partners why it should claim a market that would otherwise be theirs, why they should sell a service for Microsoft to deliver, and how they can add value to build their own CRM hosting businesses. Still, assuming it manages this challenge effectively – which is not an unreasonable assumption, given Microsoft’s history of successful partner management – the new product puts the company in position to change the landscape, not just in SaaS CRM, but in the overall CRM market.

The Microsoft CRM Radars
This report analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of Microsoft’s Customer Relationship Management offering. Microsoft is rated according to its market impact (based on revenues), user sentiment (based on customer perceptions) and technology. Despite a mediocre performance in its technology assessment, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 is certainly gaining traction in the market. Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 installed base grew rapidly in all segments of the market, and is considered to be one of the more successful elements of the Microsoft Dynamics portfolio. Functionally, the principal problem with Microsoft Dynamic CRM 3.0 is that the product is still maturing. Subsequent Microsoft Dynamic CRM releases need to present a more polished and comprehensive portfolio of features, gain deeper in-house industry expertise and hope that the rest of the Microsoft Dynamics enterprise application portfolio will also scale up in order to open more cross-sell opportunities.

The Netsuite CRM Radars
This report analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of NetSuite’s Customer Relationship Management offering. NetSuite is rated according to its market impact (based on revenues), user sentiment (based on customer perceptions) and technology. NetSuite is a provider of a comprehensive enterprise application suite delivered exclusively through a software-as-a-service model, particularly attractive for SMEs seeking to consolidate front- and back-office processes on a single on-demand platform. Considering NetSuite’s focus, Netsuite CRM is a very reasonable offering, even though it lags behind the market leaders. Given that CRM is not the exclusive focus of NetSuite’s offering, it remains to be seen how much development resources it will continue to allocate to this segment of its enterprise application suite.
