Mobile Application Stores: Google Android
Google has managed to build significant momentum behind its Android platform. It has established the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), an active developer community, and has achieved significant volumes for the first Android device. This is a good start, but if Google’s ambitions are to be realized, greater uptake by handset manufacturers and carriers is needed during 2009. Android’s success derives from making the platform as open as possible. Android is royalty-free (which makes it attractive for OEMs and carriers) and places few restrictions on developers publishing applications. These open policies are Android’s biggest strength and also its biggest challenge. Google and the OHA must avoid software fragmentation at all costs while building volumes through multiple OEMs and carriers, as this would risk inhibiting developers. Equally, they must balance developer freedom against security and ensure that Android is not used to distribute malicious applications, while proving that developers can monetize their applications through the Market. Use this report to learn what 2009 may old for Google and Android.
