| Will MediaFlo Win Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting Market in Japan? |
|
This ROA Group white paper briefly introduces the latest issues in the Japanese mobile multimedia broadcasting market. The Japanese government announced that terrestrial analog broadcasting will be shut down in 2011, and a wide spectrum of UHF/VHF bands will be released to other systems, including mobile multimedia broadcasting. Two standards are currently competing in the Japanese market to gain licenses in 2011, ISDB-Tmm, a system based on Japan’s own digital broadcasting technology, ISDB-T, and MediaFLO, developed by Qualcomm.
The leading mobile operators in Japan, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and SoftBank have all different opinions on which direction the mobile multimedia broadcasting market should be developed in Japan. While NTT DoCoMo supports a system based on ISDB-T, its rivals KDDI and SoftBank are planning to introduce MediaFLO services in Japan.
