LTE Roadmap 2010-2015 - Towards 4G
LTE: The next generation wireless technology in waiting offers medium to long term high margin growth opportunities The pre-4G technology 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the most promising stepping stone technologies towards 4th generation mobile networks. Many wireless network operators believe that LTE offers the best value proposition to increase network capacity, improve QoS and significantly enhance data rates while reducing the TCO (total cost of ownership). The big question that needs to be analyzed by operators before formulating any LTE strategy is whether customers are ready to accept LTE and pay extra dollars for high speed mobile broadband and related services. This report looks into this question in depth, taking into account current upward trends in demand for mobile data and multimedia content, and whether current technologies can sustain future growth in demand for bandwidth and capacity, should those trends persist.

The Dull But Costly Side of Next-Gen Access: Optical Distribution Networks
Service providers (SPs) buy next-generation access (NGA) infrastructure primarily through tenders focused narrowly on specific product areas. Similarly, the big NGA vendors are good at selling boxes but less proficient at partnering with SPs to help deploy and scale NGA networks economically. Consequently, constructing the optical distribution networks (ODNs) that constitute up to (on average) half or more of the per-subscriber cost of NGA rollouts is left to the carriers and a wide range of outside plant, design, and test companies. Ovum sees an opportunity for access systems vendors to more actively support carriers’ ODN buildouts to the benefit of both parties. Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and ZTE are taking some steps in this direction already, in an effort to provide their customers with NGA solutions rather than commoditized hardware.

The French Approach: An Alternative Model for Broadband Deployment
Over the past five years, France has seen widespread deployment of alternative broadband networks in less densely populated areas. Strong promotion of digital development, primarily at a regional and local level but facilitated by national legislative and regulatory measures, has led to the emergence of a viable alternative to the incumbent-owned network and the creation of a competitive wholesale market. These public initiative networks (PINs), funded by a combination of public and private investment, have brought tangible benefits to France by extending broadband availability, stimulating competition and investment, and connecting businesses and the public sector.
