Four Technologies Offer Best Investment Profile in 2009 Study
Four technologies stand out this year as having strong investment profiles according to the new Technology Trends and IT Management Best Practices 2009/2010 study from Computer Economics. The study also covers adoption trends for 10 selected IT management best practices which gives IT executives a view on how widely these management practices are being implemented, how vigorously adopters are putting these management initiatives into practice, and how quickly adoption of these practices will spread over the next few years.
Technologies covered include:

| IT Spending, Staffing and Technology Trends: ROI and TCO Trends - 2008/2009 (Chapter 4) |
The 2009/2010 version of this report is available at this page.
Although some IT investments may be viewed simply as the cost of doing business, business decision-makers ultimately expect a financial return on their investments in information technology. There are two primary measures used to evaluate the economic characteristics of IT investments: return on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO). ROI and TCO Trends reports the economic experiences of survey respondents with implementing and using 14 technologies and IT projects, including:
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) - Unified communications/unified messaging
- Data center consolidation
- Software-as-a-service (SaaS)
For each technology or IT project, the report presents the percentage of organizations with positive ROI, breakeven ROI, and negative ROI. In addition, it covers the percentage of organizations that experienced a lower TCO (total cost of ownership) than budgeted, the same TCO as budgeted, or a higher TCO than budgeted, enabling quick insights into which IT investments are the best bets.
ROI and TCO Trends is a separately purchasable chapter from the IT Spending, Staffing & Technology Trends - 2008/2009 study report (CE-4101). Learn more about IT budgets and emerging IT trends.

| Use EPEAT to Decrease Equipment Costs and Help the Environment |
|
The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) is an increasingly popular rating for selecting environmentally friendly IT equipment with a lower total cost of ownership. In fact, the U.S. government, which purchases 2.2 million computers a year, now requires that 95% of new PC acquisitions meet the EPEAT standards.
This research note outlines how IT departments stand to gain a host of benefits at minimal cost, and why they should take advantage of the rating criteria that are most relevant.

|
Software configuration management (SCM) is one of the few enterprise software types where open source software (OSS) solutions rival commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products in both functionality and user acceptance. This Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculator is designed to aid decision makers in comparing the cost of an OSS SCM tool to that of a COTS solution. Alternatively, this tool can be used to calculate TCO for a single solution - simply ignore the portion that does not apply to the enterprise's situation.
